VALHALLA AWAITS / PERDITION EP  – 8/3/24

Wales, particularly the South of the principality, has become a breeding ground for so many compelling new bands, it defies the laws of nature. Florence Black, King Kraken, Scarlet Rebels, Pearler, Those Damn Crows, Black Lakes, the list  goes on and on, there must be something in the water. Valhalla Awaits are another Welsh outfit that first

FLORENCE BLACK/JAMES AND THE COLD GUN/MUDDIBROOKE-KK’S 6/2/24

The rain was lashing down as I made my way to KK’s. Of course the weather didn’t deter an army of rock fans from descending on the venue, as Florence Black were in town. A soaking Tuesday night and it was packed. Three bands on the bill and my first viewing of the supports. After meeting up friends and MMH photographer Dal, it was down to the front to watch the openers.

NEW SAINTS / RESONATE EP  –  9/2/24

A four track EP hails the return of this much loved Black Country band. RESONATE sees founder members Connor Emms on vocals and drummer Des Wootton joined by Jon Hayward on bass and Rob Grosvenor on guitar. They are taking it a bit easy for a short while as Des is recovering from an operation, however, the band will be hitting stages soon to promote this new masterpiece. Last year saw the beginning of the restructuring with the EP being recorded and then produced by Andy Mills then a support show with Geoff Tate, where the guys were applauded by the audience who chanted their name out loud, in the full venue. After a hiatus of 12 years, following the sad passing of bassist Andy ‘Spon’ Spencer, the NEW SAINTS are back.

DEMENTIA AWARE FESTIVAL / STATION CANNOCK  – 20/1/24

The first gig of the year for me, after a bit of a break, I’m starting to get back into the swing of things. What better way to get the 2024 ball rolling than the Dementia Aware Fest at the Station in Cannock. I met Dave Evans on the door and got a massive hug, so good to see him although sadly this is the last ‘Dementia’ he’s organising. As soon as I walk into the venue I bump into friends I haven’t seen for months and some have travelled quite a long way to be here today. It’s like a big party to be honest, the atmosphere is so laidback and it seems everyone knows each other, by the end of the night I’m sure we’ll all be linked on social media !

ELECTRIC BLACK / LATE NIGHT LIGHTNING   20/1/24

The new album from Electric Black has been a long time coming, a follow-up to the debut ‘The Calm Before’ from 2019. They’ve kept us contented with the EP, ‘Beggars, Thieves and Everything In-Between’ and the three track single, ‘Live Ignite Sessions’ and now we are ready for the sophomore album.

THE SURVIVAL CODE / WHISPERS OF WOE  26/1/24

I’m always interested to review a band I’m not familiar with and who offer something that grasps my immediate attention. This Survival Code work was sent pretty much out of the blue and very kindly, by Rob of Stampede Press, I wasn’t expecting it to be one of the best I’ve heard for a while ! The Survival Code are a duo from London, who, reading between the lines have had their fair share of ups and downs in the music industry. It’s that wealth of experience and having the ability to pen such deep and intriguing songs, that results with the album ‘Whispers Of Woe’. Initially I had the 12 track album but there are 16 on the deluxe version, I couldn’t rest until Rob sent me the additional 4 !
