BEATFLUX – STATE OF MIND – EP/ Release TBC

A project that consists of both British and Brazilian comrades, Beatflux have been enjoying a load of radio play over the last few months. These five tracks have all seen the light as singles, but are due to be released as an EP very shortly. Recording was undertaken at the Secret Warehouse Studio in London and at studios in Brazil, so this is a bit of an international collaboration. Beatflux are Enrico Minelli on vocals, guitarist Muca, Lafellice on drums and bassist Pereira, but with a host of appearances by other musicians and friends, the five tracks are both varied and finely executed.

BLEEDING MYSELF  – A crushing opener with wailing vocals and screaming guitar, that hang above a pumping rhythm from the bass of Pereira. The constant bashing and simple drum technique by Jean, adds to the sense of fury and urgency, there’s no room for a break, it’s a song that takes caution to the wind and rides out fiercely and on a high. A rock song with no frills, I like the way they appear to just slap this together, hiding all the hard labour underneath.

Muca: Guitars , Enrico: Vocals , Jean Dolabella: Drums , Pereira: Bass . Written by Muca, Enrico and Pereira . Recorded at Family Mob Studios, São Paulo, Br, by Andre Kbelo Sangiácomo . Mixed at Family Mob Studios by Muca. Mastered at Classic Master by Carlos Freitas

STATE OF MIND, This song just ambles along, but with such a powerful feel and it really gets under you skin. This track shows that Enrico can vary his voice, switching from low grinding scowls to higher softness that creates such an enjoyable listen. The guitar of Muca stands alongside with subtle chords and the lyrics are really well constructed ;

‘Yeah, I’ve no fear, I’ve left behind
And now I’ve escaped from your spell
‘Cause I’ve got my state of mind
Yeah, I’ve no fear, I’ve left behind’

A really classy number, how this band can put so much into one song is amazing. The more I listen to it the more I appreciate the layers and all the integral parts, that give it so much balance.

THE END  – With an acoustic introduction that utters mournful vocals, lamenting the fate of Sailors and Castaways and then asks to take our souls for the sins we’ve done, The End echoes with melancholy, but it’s the essence of sadness that makes it so moving. As it glides with a trickle of soothing guitar and muffled backing, it then begins to climb and turns into a more distinct ballad. A final burst of harmonies and an increase in tone makes this a moving and quite an emotional song. A piece of work that manages to touch your innermost spirit.

WET –  This is a slice of humour with a kicking of street Punk that echoes 80s rock. The words are a random recital about moving on and you sense the band are letting off some steam. Completely differing in style from the others, it has an up beat tempo and carefree action from all those involved. The Brazilian influence is also quite apparent, a kind of joyful theme erupts and as Muca plays a few small insertions, it dances. You have to smile at the way they plunge into this number.

FADING WITH THE MORNING  – Has a haunting beginning with lustful caressing guitar strings , that swirl in a mist of remorse. Stark and severe vocals that just hold you in their grasp, the song really does capture your imagination as it lingers on notes. Again harmonies are brought in to offer more body, but the strength is with the simplicity. As Muca’s guitar strums with increasing presence and striking chords, the tempo heightens and Enrico raises the bar with his soulful and piercing cries.

Although all songs are available as singles, it may be worth holding on to purchase the EP, as combined you get a more overall appreciation, of what Beatflux have achieved in their short time together. I like the interaction and joining of other artists that gives it such a wide variety and yet it doesn’t stray from the overall atmosphere that it’s meant to create. Five tracks that showcase this band and their immense potential, it shouldn’t be long before Beatflux start to hit more of the limelight, if this high standard is replicated live.
