With a career spanning 5 albums and several EPs, The White Buffalo (aka Jake Smith), are currently touring in support of the latest album ‘Love and the Death of Damnation’ released back in August 2015. Being on the go as a recording artist since 2002 it is safe to say that since being involved with ‘Sons of Anarchy’ The White Buffalo has reached a new level of devoted fans.
Heading to the main hall it’s cosy and warm, in the nearly sold out Institute (two tickets when I went in), everyone is waiting patiently for Smith and band to come on.

The night kicks off with ‘Dark Days’, the opening track for ‘Love and the Death of Damnation’ and the places goes mental, you can’t help but jump up and down or move with the boys up on the stage.
The levels of energy on stage are through the roof, Smith and Hoffee don’t stop all night bouncing up and down and then there’s odd joke between them and the audience. On the drums was Mr Lynott looking super cool with his hat on, not sure how he managed to pound the drums and keep the it on all night. Playing acoustic guitar with a ‘rock meets blues with a punky attitude’ would seem hard to achieve but Jake makes it look so easy and effortless doing it. Jake Smith has a very deep, warm voice and with his powerful guitar strumming, the romantic and dark storytelling of his songs it’s hard to not be gawping at the stage. They play ‘I Got You’ which is a duet with Audra Mae on ‘Love and The Death of Damnation’ but Smith’s going at it alone tonight, so perfectly done I got goosebumps number one of the night and then again with ‘Love song #1’ a love song Jake made for his wife again I could not fault it.

I feel there was a good balance of old and new songs and ‘Come Join The Murder’ got the biggest reception by the audience but to be fair off stage the atmosphere was a reflection of what was going on stage and the amount of singing along that was going on shows that they have a huge following in the Midlands, this was the first gig they played in Birmingham and I’m sure won’t be the last.
Jake came on stage alone for the encore playing ‘Wish It Was True’ and the audience sang with him from begining to end (more goosebumps). The boys come together one more time to play one last song and that was it, an amazing night came to the end.
Metalheads do yourselves a favour and the next time The White Buffalo come to town make sure you don’t miss it. You will not regret it.
