Revival Black / Under The Light  – Released 26/8/22 

The second album by the Liverpudlian Quintet will reach us later this month. It’s been a long wait as the band wanted to ensure all purchasing choices were available, after so many delays in the vinyl production. Ten tracks to sample, of course there have already been singles and some songs have been played live these last few months, but it’s not long to go now for the actual release of ‘Under The light’ and I’m sure the band and all concerned are counting the days.   

‘Believe’ is a dynamic first track, lead guitarist Alan Rimmer discharges an epic intro and Dan Byrne soon adds his outstanding voice. The song develops into a crunching and stomping classic, that’s fast and furious with a sumptuous guitar solo. ‘Believe’ has all the elements, wow what an opener. One of the well known singles ‘Take You Out’ comes up next, it’s a great anthem and you can’t resist joining in with all those ‘Whoa’s’ that make up the backing vocals. Dirty low guitar at the beginning of ’See You Again’ melts and dissipates but remains something to savour, throughout this one. I do love how Alan, rhythm guitarist Adam Kerbache and bassist Jamie Hayward connect and interweave, it’s something this band have, that others struggle to achieve. The same with ‘Broken Home’ which also contains grit and a surging pulse. 

When we get to ‘Hemispheres’ it’s time to decelerate and listen to the wonder of this ballad. Dan has written all the lyrics on the album and this is a perfect time to take stock of this amazing talent.  ‘Under Fire’ allows him to show off his vocal range, which is spellbinding. It’s a return to the more gravel and groove on ‘Left Of Me’ captivating guitar riffing, combined with screechy vocals and Ash Janes’s drums, make it a particular favourite of mine. ‘Change My Mind’ is another with that messy sound that I like so much and the guitars are pumped up to the max on this. ‘Wrong Side’ sees Revival Black getting heavier in their approach, it’s darker and there’s an increase in the thundering outpouring. It belts out with Dan’s exceptional vocals again and the vibe on those strings is extraordinary. Which brings us to the final song ‘Hurricane’ that’s clearly a winner. Building gradually from Ash’s steady sticks, to explode with Dan almost screaming his heart out. It’s a melodic symphony, with feeling and a generous amount of soul. The result is simply breathtaking.              

A fantastic follow up to ’Step In Line’ that proves how Revival Black have evolved and progressed, into the flourishing and successful rock band we see today. ‘Under The Light’ is a menu of ten perfected songs, that demonstrate not just how capable these guys are, but allow us to bathe in the splendour and experience their music at its best.
