The Hypothesis – Origin
The Hypothesis call themselves a “Modern Melodic Death Metal” band.
They have been active for nearly 6 years now and have shuffered at the hands of numerous line up shuffles,
which in all honesty is not unheard of for bands in their early careers as they decide which direction and which sound they are choosing to follow.
In The Hypothesis they have chosen to follow Scar Symmetry and Dream Theater.
Now this is in no shape or form a bad thing, as for me making death metal melodic is always welcome or adding some bite to Dream Theater also works!
The comparison might be a tad lazy but within the first 45 seconds of opening track Shades To Escape you`ll see what I mean.
The sound these guys are creating flows so freely from song to song, time changes occur but not needlessly and most importantly, they don`t jar or feel awkward.
The variation of sound and style between verse and chorus is seamless, with a vocalist that can mix it up between the gutteral and the angelic also helps to power things along.
Though the harsh vocals take the lead for the majority of the album with cleans almost exclusively reserved for the choruses when they do take the forefront for example on Atonement , especially with the wonderful 80`s synth intro it`s a welcome change, which again is a wonderful touch from the band, its never overwhelming, the aggression or the mellow, its delivered in equal measure and always at the right time.
After 4 heavy tracks with some great guitar work it culminates during the closing of Exit with a wonderful guitar duel that I just didn`t see coming.
Which is another great part to the album, its equally familiar through its sound, but always keeps us guessing which direction its going to take us in next.
For me the closest comparison is a band called Straightland who were from Turkey, they much like these gents managed to meld groove into their mix alongside some blasts and good old fashioned filthy riffage, but its this groove that separates them from the rest.
The groove could be lost in many a producers hands, but whoever handled this recording knows their craft, everything is in its own place and has been given ample room to breathe.
It would be easy to let the guitars and vocals do all the heavy lifting, but nope, each instrument has its part to play as the bass grinds away beneath the thundering pulsating drums.
Then there`s the little keyboard flourishes here and there too, to lift the mood and signal in usually a catchy chorus!
This is a great record from a Finnish band that may wear their influences on their sleeves a bit too much, it cannot be denied there is a lot to enjoy on this record and I hope you take the time to give them some of your time!
Origin is out on May 5th
