Review by DJ Benson&Hedges a.k.a. Chris Healey

I picked up “Consequence” by Exocet having really enjoyed the previous release from the act on ant-zen. In comparison to its peers, “grotesque consumer” successfully generated an ominous and surreal ambiance with compelling, broken and sometimes even hypnotic rhythms. Consequence follows along the same lines. The album sounds huge, but at the same time sparse. The surreal, bleak atmospheres, the broken and sometimes hypnotic rhythms and samples drawing the listener into an urban nightmare of his own imagining. Exocet’s method and exotalent is to create a certain mood, a certain headspace and then allow the listener to fill in the gaps himself. As such, it’s an introspective journey, even though some of the material presented could work well in certain circumstances in a club environment. Hanging over the entire work is an impression of threat and anxiety. In contrast to the previous album there are, here and there, impressions of exotic perhaps even middle eastern sounds (although greatly manipulated or distorted) which along with the chosen name for the project alludes to a very contemporary anxiety and the idea of terrorism. Stand-out moments for me were the throbbing bass line on “bad taste”, the bleak drone of “drops of blood”, the momentary relief of “drugs and balance” and the desolate “like a viper” which reminds me a little of some of Lustmord’s early work. Overall, consequence offers ominous, surreal atmospheres with a genuine sense of foreboding and threat at times. Exocet draws you into an urban nightmare, perhaps intentionally this sometimes leaves you feeling lost and confused.
