ENEMY INSIDE / VENOM  Released  28/2/25   

A German band from Aschaffenburg that formed back in 2017 by Nastassja Giulia and guitar player Evan K (Mystic Prophecy, Exit Eden, ex-Cypecore)’. Enemy Inside’ supply symphonic and experimental rock, with huge riffs of bullet proof metal. This third album follows the well received ‘Seven’ from 2021 and vocalist Nastassja states: “This album is about evolution. It captures where we are as a band now while staying open to what’s next. “Venom” feels like our most authentic work yet.”  There are Eleven tracks on ‘Venom’ some featuring guest artists, expanding the innovation. I’m new to this band, however after the initial listen, I simply had to share my thoughts. 

‘Venom’ growls right at you, Nastassja has an incredible and versatile range, her snarls being replaced by not only shrieking, but gentler vocals all through this opener. Melody switching to harsher riffs and metal rapping, it’s an ‘Enemy inside’ signature tune and as contemporary as you can get. ‘Should Have Known Better’ belts out a rolling grind below the higher delicate vocals and then plunges into a hard edged chorus. It’s a superb blend and the screeching is interlaced with deeper pumping just to round it off. ‘Sayonara’ has a brilliant hook, more fast acting rapping and there’s this interbreeding of genres that makes it fascinating and engrossing. Hitting on the symphonic side ‘What We Used To Be’ builds into an enjoyable piece, with Nastassja taking control, combining her vocal talents to ensure the song reverbs with pristine quality.

‘Fuck That Party’ with guest Zak Tell of ‘CLAWFINGER’ is less than 3 minutes long, I wish it spun longer. Chaotic and wild, it’s a mash of extremes and lands with ferocious riffing. The next track also features a guest ‘Mirza Radonjica’ of Denmarks ‘SIAMESE’ joins the band for ‘Dirt On My Name’. The twin songstress idea is really cool and works immaculately. Mirza meeting Nastassja, melodic versus guttural and the result is tremendous. The recent single ‘Don’t Call Me An Angel’ is an another with unorthodox methods, electronic keys mixing with harmonies and then dipping into solid metal with the guitar of ‘Evan K’ and additional seething lines from the front-woman. 

 “‘Don’t Call Me An Angel’ dives deep into the shadows of depression – the band explains – exploring the haunting reality of how darkness can consume not only oneself but also those closest. It’s a raw confession – a reminder of the silent battles we carry, the weight that seeps into our relationships, and the unintended pain we spread. This song captures the struggle of feeling trapped in a cycle that pulls others down, even when all we want is to shield them. ‘Don’t Call Me An Angel’ is both a warning and a plea, a powerful portrayal of the emotional depths that lie behind a smile.”  

‘Innocent’ has a mild beginning, although it doesn’t take long for the mechanics of ‘Enemy Inside’ to start pounding. Punching with sharp lyrics and revolving guitar chords, the sides mingle on this track once again. The bass of ‘Dominik Stotzem’ sounds through, before the undercutting of another deep riff. ‘Unburn’ has a similar guitar sound, while the crystal clear words are uttered above it all. It’s a repetitive call by ‘Evan K’, this six stinger certainly plays with some adventurous fret working. ‘I’d Rather Be Dead’ with its keyboard intro features US rocker ‘Davey Suicide’ Nastassja and the band offer a more melodic track, that has seriously smoother tones and a refreshing bounce of energy. Very addictive on the ear and the interwoven duet increases the dynamics, stupendous. ‘Let Me Go’ has warmth, melting the edges with its subtle rhythm. A more earthy tune, with harmonies that float away any negativity, it’s a remarkable turnaround and a perfect ending to the album.   

I’ve been listening to ‘Venom’ for a while now, it’s rather addictive. There’s so many differing aspects that catch your ear, with it’s original and inventive compositions. ‘Enemy Inside’ are touring but no UK dates as yet. I do hope they reach our shores soon, they must be amazing to watch live.

“We feel that we’ve really found our sound now but that doesn’t mean it has to be the same on the next album,” Nastassja confirms. “I think it’s important to understand that a band wants to evolve and develop musically and it’s ultimately entitled to make the music they want to make as a creative collective – and that’s what this album stands for: We wanted to keep our catchy melodies while incorporating more breakdowns and harsh vocals without setting ourselves any stylistic limits.”
