Review: Harmonic Generator – Heart, Flesh, Skull and Bones

‘Harmonic Generator’, described as a heavy rock band from the South of France have released their ambitious new project ‘Heart, Flesh, Skull and Bones’. The album, packaging together four previously released EP’s, was released on June 9th and is currently beingtoured by the band, supporting Helmet on their current run of dates.

In all honesty, I don’t think this is a bad album as such. I do however, feel that it is a boring album which, personally, is worse than a bad album. At least if an album is bad, it creates emotion, it creates feelings and it leaves an impact. I can assure you, that within ten minutes of me finishing writing this, I will have forgotten the name of this band and every song on their album.

My issue with this album is that it is such a stale album, of rehashed ideas that have been done a million times before and a million times better. There are so many bands around today that just play lazy, boring rock music, say they are influenced by Led Zeppelin and call it a day. Where is the passion? Where is the true rock & roll spirit? Well wherever it is, it definitely isn’t in this album. I’m not asking them to reinvent the wheel, I’m just asking to see a single shred of creativity from their camp.

Personally, I feel this band could make it big. That may seem completely in contrast with what I have just said, but in a world where ‘Rival Sons’ are being paraded around classic rock circles and even supporting the mighty ‘Black Sabbath’ on their final tour, there is no reason that this band cannot make a name for themselves.

The album lasts just over an hour and consists of 16 tracks and Instead of leaving the listener wanting more, leaves them rolling their eyes realising they are only half way through. For this sort of thing to work, you need to get in, get out and leave the listener wishing there was just one more song for them to sink their teeth into.

Here’s the thing. I wish the guys in ‘Harmonic Generator’ the best of luck. Vocalist Quentin Barthès-Villegas has a remarkably strong voice that if used correctly could become a real selling point for this band. As for the rest of the band, I feel if they write something they are truly passionate about then we could see a brilliant album from these guys. As it stands though, that is not what we have been given time around.
