Frost* ( with support from Quantum Pig) – KK’s Steel Mill, W’ton 27th Nov 2022
It’s been a while………………..their first live dates for more than a few years – FROST* ARE BACK !!
Postponed from April 2022, the boys are VERY MUCH back in town, with the added ingredient – Craig Blundell on drums, what a first class collection of musicians, how could it be anything other than spectacular. Their first date of the tour and the first time at this venue and tbh, I was pleasantly surprised at the turnout, very impressive, the merch table was doing very well and of course. I just HAD to get one of the new t-shirts, yet another fucking black one for the collection LOL !! Although, there was also a blue one, shame I preferred the design on the black one…. oh and by the way guys, will Inside Out be re-releasing Falling Satellites on vinyl totally conspicuous by its absence on the merch table ?? Asking for a friend 😉 😉
At 7.45pm, support band Quantum Pig (who happen to be on White Star Records) took to the stage – a two man affair, playing along to backing tracks with some pithy and humorous dialogue between songs, a pleasant set that sets the scene for the audio onslaught we were all waiting for and at 9.00pm, the lights dimmed the backstage techie guy flashed his torch to the sound guy and we were off !!
Launching straight into the title track of the latest album Day And Age I was really interested to see how the boys tackled the fade out as Jem had already alluded to me in an interview in October that the track is now 2 mins longer as he’s added a synth solo – I was not disappointed, pure classic synth from the maestro and a nice segue into Terrestrial (also from the new album). With the mighty Milliontown in all its 26 minute glory at the heart of the set, we had one track from Experiments In Mass Appeal (Dear Dead Days – by FAR the best track on that album), Heartstrings from Falling Satellites (one of the encore songs) and of course – Hyperventilate and Black Light Machine from their stunning debut album, the rest of the set was (obviously) devoted to promoting the latest album – and WHY NOT !!
As this was the first date of the current mini tour and the first time at KK’s, I reckon the final date of the tour (London)
the band will be cooking with gas, but we did have a few “glitches” which added some typical Frostie humour to proceedings and throughout we had the usual cheeky humour that just proved yet again that these guys love what they do and enjoy the interaction – Basically, although they are professional musicians, they don’t take themselves too seriously, no egos on show here tonight boys ‘n girls. A nice and very thoughtful “thank you” from Jem for coming out to support the band and indeed, live music. I think it’s very safe to say, with the reception tonight, LIVE MUSIC IS BACK and what better than the Frosties to spearhead the revival.
If I had to make one negative comment, the sound wasn’t fantastic. At times, I struggled to hear Jem’s vocal and it did get a tad distorted at times. It might just be that I’m an old, haggard bastard with shot hearing after a lifetime of loud music, but nevertheless it did NOT detract from the atmosphere in the room and the warm reception between band and audience. After a two song encore, the guys left the stage to a mighty roar……..
Frost* are BACK people, miss them at your peril !!!
