DJ Hugh interviews ARTILLERY
The Altar’s DJ Hugh sat down for a nice chat with Michael from Thrashers ARTILLERY. Here is what he had to say:
So – over thirty years on and Artillery are still going strong – could you have foreseen this back when you were starting?
No not really, but i knew i still would play music. But those amazing fans we have make it very easy to keep Artillery going on, so we are so privilige to still do what we love most. Touring and recording with Artillery.
What makes the band keep coming back for more? Is it just something inside that needs to be heard?
Its very easy to say we love playing this kind of music we still have a lot of ambitions and goals to get and beside that we have the most dedicated fans so we still think we had something to offer.
Thrash is one form of metal that doesn’t change much – if it ain’t broke don’t fix it – do you agree with this, and how does it still sound new?
For 80 % you are right but i still think we are trying to add new elements, new way to write the songs, but at the same time still be true to our roots
Penalty By Perception is out now – did you go into it’s creation with any specific concepts, or was it just jam the riffs out and let the Artillery magic happen?
No not really, we always try to get some good riffs with some catchy hooklines and put a Little bit of new elements in the songs.
The album has a very European sound to it – obviously – but do you think thrash developed differently on the different continents? We usually see references to the Bay Area bands, the Teutonic Four, then the South American scene.
Yeah, i think you can hear where most of the bands hail from except from some few ones. I think we were lucky when we started in Denmark no one there played thrash and that have helped us a lot to create our own sound.
The usual thrash song subjects are covered on PBP – war, death, religion…any other ideas in there? What’s Cosmic Brain all about?
Cosmic Brain is about the String Theory and we also have lyrics about mind controlling etc.
When you’re not touring or rehearsing, what do you like to do for fun?
I´m a big football fan i like Liverpool and FC Copenhagen a lot and always try to follow them as much as possible.
