SOS FESTIVAL / WHITTLES@TOKYO OLDHAM – Friday 5/7/24 

I decided to take the train to Oldham, which turned out to be a bit of a trek from Telford. The Metro from Manchester to Oldham was easy enough though, even if some of my fellow passengers were, shall we say, ‘interesting’ characters ! In the end I found a taxi and reached my hotel, with a few hours spare to adjust and get ready for the opening night of SOS 2024. My first time in Oldham and for this festival, which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year. Three days and 29 bands, 30 if you count the after show gig by the crew on the Saturday night. So many to watch and despite there being no clashes between the outdoor Viking stage and indoor Skull one, I didn’t catch the whole performance of every band so apologies if I missed your favourites.

SOS FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES FULL LINE UP AND RUNNING ORDER 

The SOS Festival at Whittles in Oldham is one of the most popular grassroot events of the rocking year. To celebrate the fifteenth anniversary, this years line-up is stupendous. Full details have now been released and with standard tickets at £30.00 for 3 days of music and 30 bands, that’s only £1 a band !!

DEAD DEMONS – INTERVIEW WITH DIANE FROM MMH  31/8/23 

CW - I think there is NWOTHM new wave of traditional heavy metal already, which is cool with young bands such as ‘Tailgunner’ bringing back the vibe. MH – To paraphrase Bruce Dickinson “You can’t have a new wave if the old one never left!” It’s great to see a resurgence of new bands with that classic sound, especially with the legends themselves retiring!

THE TREATMENT/MANSWORTH/DEAD DEMONS – Queens Hall 5/8/23 

. ‘Children’ has a sleaze ridden and weighty bend of a groove with Laurie on his Flying V and Rob adding maracas to give even more balance. While ‘Evil Lies’ is faster and Rob raises his vocals to a new level. Bouncing and flowing ‘Rock In A Hard Place’ gets our hands in the air and then it’s down to a slower Rhythm and Blues feel for ‘When The River Runs Dry’. Laurie takes to his battered old Telecaster on occasion, I’m sure that guitar could tell a few tales and as they leave us with ’Stone In Your Shoe’ I’m still transfixed.
