Dementia Aware Festival/HMV Coventry THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK! 25/11/23
A nice excursion to Coventry for this charity event. Dementia Aware festivals are held for a cause, that is becoming increasingly common. All the bands today, have given up their time for free, to support Allison and Richard, for this all dayer.

THE ANSWER / KIRA MAC – KK’s Steel Mill 17/11/23
I’ve been looking forward to this one for quite a while. When ‘The Answer’ emerged with ‘Rise’ back in 2006 I was such a big fan. They had a swagger, that mixed all their Celtic, Gaelic, Irish and whatever roots, to produce music that was adored by a multitude of us.

SHARKFEST 4 / THE STATION CANNOCK – 28/10/23
Time for Sharkfest 4, which is organised by Mark Parsley and Sharon Crosby and is being held at The Station in Cannock. This festival has ten bands and the compère for the day is that lovable comedian Pete K Mally. Quite a mixed line up, besides the rock, we have Blues and Funk not forgetting the Flamenco Glam ! I get there just in time for the openers at 12.30 and the venue is already beginning to fill up nicely, including some Sharks !

GLENN HUGHES / THE DAMN TRUTH – KK’S STEEL MILL 21/10/23
It wasn’t always easy being a Deep Purple fan in the 1970’s. I was a young teenager and totally infatuated with Ian Gillan, so when Mark 2 became Mark 3, the changes took a while to be embraced. Glenn Hughes was soon enlisted to replace Roger Glover on bass and his funk/soul influences led to both ‘Burn’ and ’Stormbringer’ treading a different path from previous ‘Purple’ albums.

MOLLY KARLOFF / QUESTIONS OF ANGELS / SLYDER SMITH & THE OBLIVION KIDS – THE GIFFARD 6/10/23
This highly anticipated gig couldn’t come around soon enough. After reviewing the new Molly Karloff album ‘Breaking Out’, this album launch show was my first chance to hear most of it live. The Giffard was slow to fill up, but the peeps just kept coming in until the room was rammed. Three bands on stage tonight and quite a contrast of styles.

NWOCR LIVEFEST 2 / KK’S STEEL MILL DAY 2 – 24/9/23
So here we all are back at KK’s for Day 2. A few sore heads in the room no doubt, but like yesterday there’s already a decent crowd on the barrier at 2pm. After such a wicked Day 1 with ‘The Treatment’ finishing off in style, today another 8 bands are lined up to represent the NWOCR at LIVEFEST 2. There’s a few preliminary chats, introductions and friendly hugs, then I head on down to the front for the opening band.

NWOCR LIVEFEST 2 / KKS STEEL MILL – Day 1 23/9/23
Richard Brindley and his crew certainly know how to whet your appetite for their events, the build up for NWOCR LIVEFEST 3 has been enormous. This long awaited and epic occasion has finally arrived and judging by the amount of folk in KK’s at 2pm, it’s going to be a scorcher. LIVEFEST 3 also coincides with the launch of the NWOCR Volume 2 compilation CD, which was released on September 22nd and many of the bands appearing over the weekend, have songs on the double CD package that has over 40 tracks. There’s a whole pile of NWOCR Merch to be found on the Website including that collectable Tea Towel !

TIGERFEST 2023 / THE RIGGER – 9/9/23
edible day, a line up that was so entertaining and yet again I must praise The Rigger and it’s staff for hosting such a brilliant and faultless day of music. The sound was spot on and Anthony Bellamy must be congratulated for organising TIGERFEST 2023.
On Saturday at Tigerfest the bands were signing posters and a t-shirt to auction off at the end of the night, but unfortunately these disappeared. So if anyone picked up any of these items up by mistake can you please contact me.

THE TREATMENT/MANSWORTH/DEAD DEMONS – Queens Hall 5/8/23
. ‘Children’ has a sleaze ridden and weighty bend of a groove with Laurie on his Flying V and Rob adding maracas to give even more balance. While ‘Evil Lies’ is faster and Rob raises his vocals to a new level. Bouncing and flowing ‘Rock In A Hard Place’ gets our hands in the air and then it’s down to a slower Rhythm and Blues feel for ‘When The River Runs Dry’. Laurie takes to his battered old Telecaster on occasion, I’m sure that guitar could tell a few tales and as they leave us with ’Stone In Your Shoe’ I’m still transfixed.
