Following on from their reloaded debut album, ‘Under The Gun’, Dead Man’s Whiskey released a new EP 1st October featuring 4 new tracks and a piano version of fan-favourite ‘Make You Proud’. DMW are a 5-piece hard rock band from London who formed in 2016. They’ve been busy developing a solid fanbase and great reputation as a live band, including taking the Rising Stage by storm at Ramblin’ Man Fair and the Kiss Cruise.
After a hellish year of lockdown’s DMW frontman Nico says writing was a good way to keep busy and remain sane.
‘Sleep When I’m Dead’ is a track which has been in evolution for a number of years and has finally emerged as a killer song with rising chords and a huge riff, a thunderous rhythm section and gruff, raw vocals. The snare drum packs a punch and there is a standout guitar solo from Billy Kons. This is a fighting song, rabble-rousing and exciting.
‘I Am Here’ has a different, more funky groove, with those strong, gravelly vocals, again rhythm heavy and a full on face-melter.
Title track ‘Breakout’ has a steady beat, plenty of cowbell, raucous vocals and gang chants, a real chugging rocker with a breath-taking guitar solo.
‘Never Ever’ has a powerful beat with bone-crunching riff, hard-hitting and brutal but also incredibly melodic. The vocoder is put to good use and the dual guitars are ferocious.
The re-recording of ‘Make You Proud’ follows playing the track live with a guest pianist. This is sublime, the beautiful stroke of piano keys opening and deep, soulful vocals oozing emotion. It’s gentle and profound, damn that dust in my eyes…. A great, classy stripped back song with depth.
This is a great EP from a young, exciting, versatile and as-yet under-rated band. I’ve followed them since day 1 and cannot wait to see what the future holds.
Check it out now.
Standouts: Never Ever
